January – Theme of the month THE MIND!

The mind can be our greatest tool or biggest hindrance depending on how it is playing us- or how we are playing with it. 

 

2 mins inside my head today. 

 

Oh god not paid that Aqualia bill. OMG that naan bread was huge. Ok finish article, work out. Box? Circuit? Yoga. Dunno. Book flight to Mexico. Do you even wanna go to Mexico. That flight with a mask. And offset must offset. What if it locks down there? It’s not gonna lockdown there. If it does, come home. You can do water therapy in the sea there. Be some nice guys in the sea there. But you left your swimwear in Portugal.  Oh shit it’s Alfie’s birthday in 2 weeks. What you gonna get him? An experience. But, he can’t use experience at the moment. Need to plan that class for later. What do people need right now? Must finish that article. Oh shall I invite friends for dinner? Wonder if the 3pm curfew has started yet. Could take a nap right now… 

In Yoga studies we often look at layers of being as ‘sheaths,’ structures, that cover  our true essential nature. The trouble is that so many of us have been brought up without being educated about the nature of the mind…And often we never knew that the mind is just one aspect of our multi faceted natures… 

Growing up, if someone, anyone, had said to you = You are not your mind. Your thoughts are not real. You create your own reality. You create your own stories in your mind. You could choose anything. How helpful would this have been for you as a teenager?!?! 

What kinds of things can you do to help your mental health/mind? This is by no means exhaustive! 

What ONE SIMPLE THING can you do right now to bring a smile to your face? Could be bringing a positive memory to the front of your mind, put on your favourite track,  a quick dance, a phone call to someone who makes you laugh, quick sprint round the block, hug a tree (trust me!), get some art stuff out and have a squiggle for the sake of it?! 

 GUT BRAIN! Cut out caffeine, gluten, add in dark green leafy veggies, Omega3 oils, any kind of berry, Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut  all contain healthy microbes such as lactic acid bacteria. Fermented foods have been shown to alter brain activity. High-fibre foods: Whole grains, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables all contain prebiotic fibers that are good for your gut bacteria.

EITHER EXHAUST OR RELAX YOUR SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (if you are feeling energised). Exhaust your nervous system with some Strength, Hiit, Cardio exercise….If you are struggling with accountability, don’t know where to begin, or need a SMART program designing for you PLEASE don’t be shy, get in touch!

 If you are feeling DRAINED, EXHAUSTED, FATIGUED I do not recommend working out at all. I recommend the exact opposite. Working out when you are exhausted will do a number of SHIT things to your system and will substantially affect your immune system.  Relaxing the central nervous system is probably the best thing if you are feeling DONE IN. Build a blanket nest, putting on a Yoga Nidra (register with me for helpful tools on this). Have a long hot bath, wrap yourself up warm, meditate, drop in, put your legs up the wall- REST REST REST. 

If you can, receive a Water Journey Session. By relaxing the body, the muscles, the bones, we can get the mind to fully relax and and ultimately let go into and rediscover the beauty of NO MIND. 

Spend the next 3 minutes saying out loud all the things you feel grateful for. Do it! Then see how you feel after. Shift your mind, shift your vibe.

REMEMBER THIS TOO SHALL PASS. Human beings are cyclical in nature- remember the last time you felt super duper great? Buzzy and happy? It passed didn’t it? So will times when we are feel shit and out of alignment. 

Remembering when you are RELAXED, you will make better decisions, you will feel healthier, and the right things will fall into your life more easily. 

Remember you are loved. Really though. Someone right now is thinking of you.

Remembering we are (W)HOListic beings- not just mind, not just body, but made of lots of different aspects! The mind feeds the body, the body feeds the mind etc… ALLneed to be managed well through smart nutrition, smart training/movement, therapy (from movement to mind therapy)! Once these are in alignment we start to feel more connected to our highest self and aligned with everything.
